We may believe that a good employee, parent, spouse, child, parent, good friend religious person never says \u201cno.\u201d\u00a0 The problem is, if we don\u2019t learn to say \u201cno,\u201d we stop liking ourselves and the people we always try to please. We may even punish others out of resentment.\u00a0 When do we say \u201cno?\u201d When \u201cno\u201d is what we really believe. When we learn to say \u201cno\u201d we learn to stop lying. People can trust us and we can trust ourselves. All sorts of good things start to happen when we say what we mean. If we\u2019re scared to say no we can buy some time. We can take a break, rehearse the word, and go back and say \u201cno.\u201d\u00a0 We don\u2019t have to offer long explanations for our decisions.\u00a0 When we can say no, we can start to say \u201cyes\u201d to the good. Our \u201cno\u2019s\u201d and our \u201cyes\u2019s\u201d begin to be taken seriously. We can control of ourselves. And we learn a secret:\u00a0 \u201cNo\u201d isn\u2019t that hard to say.
