{"id":460,"date":"2014-01-12T17:29:58","date_gmt":"2014-01-12T17:29:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.joycejuster.com\/thoughts\/?p=460"},"modified":"2014-01-20T18:11:43","modified_gmt":"2014-01-20T18:11:43","slug":"the-difference-between-self-discipline-punishment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.joycejuster.com\/thoughts\/?p=460","title":{"rendered":"The Difference Between Self-Discipline &#038; Punishment"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4 style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>First, let\u2019s look at the nature of punishment\u2026<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-466\" alt=\"Discipline_1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.joycejuster.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Discipline_1a.jpg\" width=\"124\" height=\"177\" \/><b><i>Punishment<\/i><\/b> is a behavior growing out of anger and it can take many, many forms:\u00a0 a loud voice, a sharp tongue, a rough hand, a glaring eye, a silent look, a turned shoulder. <b><i>The origin of the word \u201cpunishment\u201d means \u201cto take vengeance.\u201d<\/i><\/b> It is used against others and all-too-often we use it against ourselves and are left in the wake of the effects of its destructive shaming and guilt. It is designed solely to reduce the likelihood of the occurrence of certain behaviors which we do not agree with and want to keep from occurring in the future.\u00a0 <i><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">When the behavior has stopped, it is not because of compliance.<\/span><\/i> There is no new learning.\u00a0 Rather, we or the individual on the receiving end of our punishment\u2014have simply decided at some point to no longer wish to experience further punishment. We stop engaging in these behaviors <i><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">always and only<\/span><\/i> as long as the threat of punishment is immediately present.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-473\" alt=\"Discipline_2c\" src=\"http:\/\/www.joycejuster.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Discipline_2c.jpg\" width=\"605\" height=\"309\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>Now let us look at the nature of self-discipline\u2026<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-463 alignleft\" alt=\"Discipline_4\" src=\"http:\/\/www.joycejuster.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Discipline_4.jpg\" width=\"308\" height=\"211\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.joycejuster.com\/thoughts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Discipline_4.jpg 308w, http:\/\/www.joycejuster.com\/thoughts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Discipline_4-300x205.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 308px) 100vw, 308px\" \/><b><i>Discipline<\/i><\/b>, either toward another or toward ourselves, (self-discipline) is the art of making a \u201cdisciple\u201d of one\u2019s self.\u00a0 \u00a0<b><i>The origin of the word, \u201cdisciple\u201d means \u201cto instruct, to teach, to learn.\u201d <\/i><\/b>W. J. Bennett writes, in <i>The Book of Virtues, <\/i>\u201cOne is one\u2019s own teacher, trainer, coach and \u2018disciplinarian.\u2019 It is an odd sort of relationship, paradoxical in its own way, and many of us do not handle it very well.\u00a0 There is much unhappiness and personal distress in the world because of failures to control tempers, appetites, passions, and impulses. \u2018Oh, if only I had stopped myself\u2019 is an all too familiar refrain\u201d.\u00a0 In our lives, we will continually be in the process of disciplining ourselves by effectively managing our anger, our appetites, our passions, our impulses, then disciplining (teaching) ourselves (and others) by letting ourselves (and others) to experience the <i>natural consequences<\/i> of choices, the consequences that flow freely \u00a0from the choices that are made. Self-discipline need not be harsh; it can take the form of a quiet resolve or determination that then directs our choices. It is exacting, but is rarely served by our being self-critical or self-denigrating.
