{"id":10,"date":"2009-08-03T11:46:43","date_gmt":"2009-08-03T16:46:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.joycejuster.com\/?p=10"},"modified":"2013-11-18T20:36:52","modified_gmt":"2013-11-18T20:36:52","slug":"disappointments-are-bound-to-happen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.joycejuster.com\/thoughts\/?p=10","title":{"rendered":"Disappointments are Bound to Happen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Baseball has its curve balls, golf its sand traps and water holes; football its blockers.\u00a0 Clouds protect us from the sun and they also bring rain\u2014sometimes of torrential magnitude.\u00a0 We must make room for lamentations; make space to grieve lest we become cynical.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-372\" alt=\"disappointment\" src=\"http:\/\/www.joycejuster.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/disappointment.jpg\" width=\"209\" height=\"241\" \/>When we are infants our cries brought the world to us, cry and we were fed, cry and we were changed and cleaned, cry and we were held.\u00a0 We were the center around which others came to meet and serve our needs.<\/p>\n<p>Recall, if you will, being two years old, hearing and comprehending \u201cno\u201d in a way as never before.\u00a0 \u201cWhat do you mean I can\u2019t have that pretty red balloon?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cWhy can\u2019t I put this in my mouth?\u00a0 But I want another cookie!!!\u201d\u00a0 Cry we did as we have always done.\u00a0 BUT, it doesn\u2019t get us what we want.\u00a0 So, we cried louder and we still didn\u2019t get what we wanted. What\u2019s going on?\u00a0 It used to work!\u00a0 Who changed the rules?\u00a0 Now we are not only crying as a way to indicate what we want, we are crying because we are NOT getting what we want.\u00a0 So, we cry louder and more persistently.\u00a0 Still not getting what we want.\u00a0 Now not only are we crying as a way to indicate what we want, and not only are we crying because we are frustrated we now are crying because we are confused and cannot get the world to do as we bid.\u00a0 Disappointment\u2026 bound to happen.<\/p>\n<p>Our children need to know:\u00a0 disappointments bound to happen, part of life, not an indication of an inner defect!\u00a0 Thwarted outcome\u2026 bound to happen.\u00a0 Curve ball\u2026 bound to happen.\u00a0 Choppy waters\u2026 bound to happen.\u00a0 Not getting what you want\u2026 bound to happen.\u00a0 Disappointment is bound to happen.\u00a0 Our sacred charges as parents is teaching our children of its inevitability and affirm for them their innate inner resiliency to prevail.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Baseball has its curve balls, golf its sand traps and water holes; football its blockers.\u00a0 Clouds protect us from the sun and they also bring rain\u2014sometimes of torrential magnitude.\u00a0 We must make room for lamentations; make space to grieve lest we become cynical.
